Brackley TownNext up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a 482-mile round trip to Northamptonshire, as we face Brackley Town in the Enterprise National League at St James’ Park.
Brackley Town sit 16th in the National League, two places and one point behind The Heed. Brackley are on a three-game losing streak in the league and are without a goal in any of these games, although, they made up for the lack of goals in Tuesday night’s FA Cup fourth Qualifying Round replay, with an emphatic 6-2 win over Woking.
We’ve Met Before
The most recent meeting between these two sides came during Gateshead’s National League North title winning campaign.
James Armson’s 81st minute penalty separated the two sides in April 2022, with The Saints running out 1-0 winners at St James’ Park, which put Brackley in pole position in the league, with only a handful of games left. The Heed finished the campaign strongly, and eventually sealed the title seven points clear of second placed Brackley.
Travel & Ticketing Information
St James’ Park located to the south of Brackley and is around a 20 minute walk from the town centre.
If you’re heading down by rail, there is no railway station in Brackley, and as such there are no direct trains. Our recommended route would be to catch an LNER or Lumo service from Newcastle to London Kings Cross, then change onto Metropolitan or Circle line service to Baker Street, walk to Marylebone and catch a Chiltern Railways service to Bicester Village, from here, you can catch Stagecoach Oxfordshire service 500 to Churchill Way, which is a short walk from the ground.
If you’re travelling by car, from the North, leave the M1 at Junction 15A and follow the A43 South (signposted Oxford & M40). After approximately 8 miles the road crosses the A5 at a roundabout just outside Towcester. Follow the A43 past Silverstone to Brackley and at the first roundabout (BP Garage), take the first exit (A43, Oxford & M40). At the second roundabout, take the second exit (A43, Oxford & M40). At the third roundabout, take the third exit (Brackley, South). After approximately 100 metres, take the 2nd exit at the mini roundabout and follow the road towards Brackley, then follow signs for ‘Football Club’.
Car parking at St James Park is limited and costs £3.50 per vehicle, spaces cannot be reserved and are on a first come, first served basis. Gateshead played out a goalless draw at Brackley Town, with chances at a premium in Northamptonshire.
Alun Armstrong made one change to the side that defeated Aveley last weekend, with Frank Nouble replacing Kian Pennant upfront.
The game started in frantic fashion, with the hosts going down to 10 men within seven minutes.
Kyle Hurst ran onto a long ball forward before being clipped down by Zak Lilly, with the defender being the last man back.
From the resulting free-kick, Harry Chapman struck narrowly over the Brackley goal.
Chances were few and far between for the rest of the first half, the biggest opportunity coming from the hosts when Danny Waldron fired wide at close-range.
The Saints created another big chance after the break, when Michael Nottingham’s strike was parried and the rebound couldn’t be followed through.
At the other end, David Ferguson’s header hit the post before Armstrong made three changes.
Max Melbourne, Curtis Edwards and Kenton Richardson were called upon – however the latter managed just 13 minutes before being forced off with an injury.
Edwards came close with curling strike from range, while Ferguson again posed danger with a header, before the referee called time on a tight contest at St James Park.
Gateshead: Brooks, Johnson (Melbourne 68’), Flint (Richardson 68’, (Pennant 81’)), Bakare, Ferguson, Home (Edwards 68’), Flint, Butterfield (Telford 77’), Hurst, Nouble Chapman
