Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm the signing of winger Michael Spellman on a one-year deal, with an optional one-year extension.
The 23-year-old signs terms on Tyneside until 2027 after spending the past two seasons in EFL League Two with Newport County, racking up 72 appearances across all competitions for the Welsh side while scoring seven goals in the Football League. Spellman was also named as Newport’s Fans’ Player of the Season for the 2025/26 campaign, scoring five goals in League Two last term for The Exiles.
The North-East native spent time in Sunderland’s academy system after being scouted while playing for Chester-le-Street United in the Wearside League, and gained senior experience on loan with Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town before stepping into the Football League with Newport.
Spellman now returns to the North East with Gateshead, adding Football League experience to Lee Cattermole’s attack ahead of the first home fixture of the season against Woking on Saturday, August 15th.
“I can’t wait to get started – there’s no better feeling than being at home [in the North East],” said Spellman.
“First and foremost, I want to bring goals, I want to bring assists and I do want to excite the fans and get them off their seat. I’m delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get started and meet the fans.”
“It was a big decision for me [moving to Newport], but it was something I needed at the time and I’m so glad I did that because it helped me become the player I am today. I’m a lot more confident, I believe in myself a lot more, and I just want to play football and score goals.”
Welcome to Gateshead, Micky!
