Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm the signing of defender Callum Johnson on a one-year deal with an option.

The right-back arrives at Gateshead International Stadium after most recently spending the 2024/25 season with League Two side Bradford City, making 14 appearances across all competitions, with registration on Tyneside to follow once the club’s FIFA ban is lifted.

The 28-year-old boasts a wealth of Football League experience having racked up over 200 appearances across the third and fourth tiers of English football – with 150 of those coming in League One for Accrington Stanley, Fleetwood Town and Portsmouth after graduating from Middlesbrough’s academy system.

“I’m just happy to get started and continue building fitness with the lads,” said Johnson.

“Alun [Armstrong] rang me in the summer and said he was interested in taking me here, and we just had a good chat on the phone and it was done pretty quick really. I know him from when I was at Middlesbrough, I trust him and I think he’ll be a good person to play under.

“I’ve played just short of 300 games now in the EFL so I’m not short of experience, and I just need to take that on my shoulders and try to help alongside the more senior lads who we already have.

“I’ve experienced playing in teams who have been underdogs before and we’ve have won leagues and been promoted. If you’ve got everyone pulling in the same direction and a good team spirit, then I think that’s half the battle.”

Welcome to Gateshead, Callum!
