Callum Whelan has signed a deal with Gateshead Football Club ahead of the new season!

Callum Whelan has committed his future to the heed, penning a 2 year contract with Gateshead FC! Subject to NL and Fa approval.

Callum Whelan first joined the Heed from Solihull Moors on loan during the 22/23 season. He made his first appearance in February 2023 but was recalled by Solihull Moors in April 2023. Whelan played a vital role in Gateshead’s survival in the 22/23 season and created a strong bond in midfield with another loanee, Ed Francis.

Whelan started to show great footballing potential at a young age. Callum had a very impressive youth career as he played through the academy ranks at Manchester United. During his career, Callum had loan spells at Oldham Athletic and Port Vale. His loan spells allowed him to gain experience as a player playing alongside season professionals.

Callum Whelan went on to join Solihull Moors in 2021, signing a one year deal. During his time at Solihull Moors, he boosted the teams midfield and he quickly gained attention from fans and the media due to his fantastic ability to move the ball.

We have recently seen Whelan at Gateshead International Stadium last season and he had a very impressive loan spell as he showed his diverse range of skills including his tactical awareness and his ability to orchestrate the tempo of the game.

“I’m over the moon to be back. It’s taken a few weeks but I am so happy it’s over the line and I am looking forward to preseason to meet all the players and the staff once again” said Callum.

“When last season came to an end, all I thought about was wanting to come back on a permanent basis. I had really good conversations with Mike before the season ended and I really couldn’t imagine being anywhere else!”

“I will give everything I’ve got to help the team win as many games as possible and as a team we’ve got a great structure and an exciting playing style. We have lots of talent in the group and some really good individuals. When it comes to pre-season we want to continue that momentum from the back end of last season and keep improving as a collective” said Callum

“When I came here on loan last season, I settled in really well and I can’t speak highly enough of the set of boys. The few months I had here at Gateshead was arguably the most enjoyable few months I’ve had in football. I couldn’t say no!”

Ian Watson added, “He was outstanding when he was with us on loan, he was a real catalyst for our change in form. We were desperate to keep him just after a week of him being around the boys. He has had lots of interest from other clubs but we are glad that he wants to work with us and help us develop.”

“He’s a special, special player and I don’t think you get players like Whelan that often. We’re really delighted to have Callum on board for the new season” said Ian.

Welcome Back, Callum Whelan!
