Gateshead Football Club can confirm that Bernard McWilliams has made the difficult decision to step down from his role as club chairman due to ill health.
This has not been an easy decision for Bernard. Over recent years, he has dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy and commitment to the club, always putting Gateshead FC and its supporters at the heart of everything he has done. While stepping away is necessary for him to focus on his health and wellbeing, it is a decision taken with a heavy heart.
Everyone associated with Gateshead Football Club would like to place on record our sincere gratitude to Bernard for his dedication, leadership and unwavering support, and wish him a full and speedy recovery.
To ensure stability and continuity during this period, the club is pleased to announce that former chairman and owner Graham Wood has agreed to return and assume the role of Interim Chairman, subject to the approval of the Independent Football Regulator.

“I thank the board for their support and understanding as I take this difficult decision to step back, but the time has come to put my health first,” said McWilliams.
“There could be no better person to take over than Graham Wood, whose love for Gateshead Football Club is second to none, and I look forward to his speedy approval from the Independent Football Regulator to allow him to take charge.
“Finally, I would like to thank everyone for the support I have been given over the years – from the fans to the staff and players, and especially our wonderful band of volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes to ensure match days happen.
“The club will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to continuing to support Gateshead FC in the future.”
