Gateshead FC is saddened to learn of the passing of former club secretary and supporter, James Lancelot Battla, aged 96.
Known as Jim to friends and family, Battla first took over as secretary of the club under it’s former guise of Gateshead AFC in 1960 and remained in post for three years before resigning due to his external work commitments as an accountant.
Jim returned to the club when the present iteration of Gateshead FC was formed in 1977, taking on secretarial duties alongside his wife, Iris, in addition to producing and printing the club’s award-winning match day programme for a number of years before retiring in the late 90’s and following the club as a supporter.
The condolences of all at Gateshead FC go out to Jim’s wife Iris, sons Geoff and Keith, and their extended family.
Jim’s funeral is to be held at Saltwell Crematorium on Monday, May 12 at 12pm.
