Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm that James Montgomery has been appointed as U19 Assistant Coach & U17-U19 Specialist Goalkeeping Coach.
Montgomery becomes the second member of the first team squad to join Gateshead FC Academy’s coaching setup, following the appointment of Louis Storey as Head of Football Development.
The goalkeeper’s dual role will see him assist the incoming U19 Coach on match days, as well as providing specialist coaching to the goalkeepers within our U17, U18 and U19 squads for the 2022/23 season.
Montgomery re-joined Gateshead for the third time in March 2022, and has made 52 appearances for the club.
The 28-year-old has gained Football League experience with Forest Green Rovers and Southend United, and has also appeared for AFC Telford United, AFC Fylde and Chesterfield as well as earning two caps for England C.
“It’ll be good for the keepers to have a specialised coach, and it also brings on the link between the first team and the academy,” said Montgomery.
“A few of the lads played for the U19s last year, and hopefully with myself being a bit more of a senior member it’ll be something that builds the relationship between the two groups.
“That will be one of the key things and hopefully I can help the lads from the U17s, U18s and U19s progress.”
