Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm the signing of Kenton Richardson, subject to FA and National League ratification.

The defender has penned a one-year deal at Gateshead International Stadium, with the option of a second year at the club’s discretion.

Richardson joins the club following his release from Championship side Sunderland, having spent the majority of the 2021/22 season on loan with Vanarama National League North side Spennymoor Town.

The right-back made 27 league appearances for The Moors last season, and played the full 90 minutes in both fixtures against Gateshead.

Prior to his loan stint at Spennymoor, Richardson made 20 appearances for Sunderland U23s across two seasons and three appearances for the first team in the 2021/22 Papa John’s Trophy.

He has also made 33 National League appearances with Hartlepool United and Notts County, in addition to playing 11 games in League Two for the former.

“It’s been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks,” said Richardson.

“As soon as I found out about the interest my mind was made up, I wanted to come here, so I’m buzzing to get it done.

“When i played against Gateshead last season you could see they were the best team in the league, they deserved to win the league.

“You saw the togetherness as well, and it’s something I wanted to be a part of.”
