Carl Morrison hailed his side’s ‘amazing character’ following Gateshead Ladies’ return to form against Chester-le-Street United Women.

The Heed’s win at Chester-le-Street United Women has intensified the pressure on fourth-placed Consett, as there is now only a one-point difference between the two teams in the North East Women’s Football League.

It marks Gateshead’s seventh victory of the season, with the Tynesiders remaining undefeated in their last four matches. Morrison feels his team could have garnered more points in their past results but remains committed to building upon the positive momentum they’ve been generating.

“I was really pleased [with the performance against Chester le Street United],” said Morrison.

“We’ve shown amazing character to come back twice from being a goal down, 0-1 then 2-1. I think the girls got everything they deserved.

“You forget that we are unbeaten in four because there were three that we drew and they all felt like losses because they were three games that we absolutely dominated.

“It’s a tough one as much as we are unbeaten in four we do feel like it’s four games we should have came away with maximum points from.

“We didn’t lose any of those games and we are undefeated so we’ll just look to keep that going.”

Gateshead will travel to table-toppers Sunderland Ladies under-23s at the start of April – with the undefeated side being the toughest fixture to play. Morrison recalled the previous encounter in September when Gateshead suffered a 4-1 defeat against the league leaders.

“When we played them at home it was a really close game – their quality showed in the second half,” said Morrison.

“They’ve got a large selection of players to pick from. But we will be confident in what game we play where we can go and can compete.”

Morrison admitted that the upcoming fixture will be a tough one and if his side is to come away with some points they will have to be selective when they try and score.

“I think we will choose our moments a little bit more,” said Morrison.

“What I would say pretty much every game so far this season is we’re generally a team that dominates the ball, and has a lot of it, we know against Sunderland we are probably going to have to suffer a little bit without the ball and it’s going to be times when that’s fine.

“We are going to have to make sure that we pick and choose our times and not be too naive because we know they’ve got the opportunity to punish at every opportunity.”
