Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead scored seven for the second time in pre-season to earn their second win in as many days at Blyth Spartans.

Goals from Oli Thompson, Owen Oseni, Regan Booty, Will McGowan and a trialist – alongside an own goal – capped off a successful night at Croft Park and maintained Gateshead’s 100% pre-season record after four games.

Rob Elliot named an entirely new 11 following his side’s 2-0 win at North Shields on Thursday night, with 10 first team names starting alongside one trialist at Croft Park.

It was former Blyth loanee Thompson who opened the scoring with just nine minutes on the clock, as the winger took down Luke Hannant’s cross into the centre of the box before lashing home to hand The Heed the advantage.

Oseni got his evening off the mark eight minutes later with Hannant the architect once again, sending a ball into the box for the forward to chest down and prod into the back of the net.

Oseni had two chances to add to his tally moments later, first sending McGowan’s deft chip crashing against the far post from close range before being denied by the offside flag one minute later.

Only two minutes after that though, Gateshead had their third, as Booty stepped up to a 25-yard free-kick and blasted high into the net for his first goal of pre-season.

Former Blyth man McGowan added a fourth just after the half-hour mark when he pounced on loose ball from the hosts’ goalkeeper before slotting home one-on-one, taking The Heed four up into the break.

A slice of good fortune saw the visitors notch a fifth only four minutes after the restart as Oseni’s pressure caused a Blyth defender to slide past his own goalkeeper and into the back of the net, before Gateshead’s trialist volleyed home from close range to grab a sixth with 57 minutes gone.

Oseni would finally get his elusive second of the night with 64 minutes on the clock after being picked out by McGowan’s lofted ball, before lifting over the on-rushing goalkeeper and converting with the net at his mercy for seven.

Thompson was denied an eighth of the evening only moments later when his curling strike crashed back off the far post, which would be his last action with the winger one of nine changes as the U18s’ took to the field for the final 20 minutes.

The Heed’s youngsters continued the onslaught for the game’s final stages, with Callum Bone weaving past two defenders before slotting inches wide from 12 yards before Harry Redshaw was denied by the offside flag after seemingly scoring Gateshead’s eighth.

Elliot’s side would have to settle for seven by the final whistle however, making it eighteen goals scored and four wins from their four pre-season games to date.
