Next up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a 526-mile round trip to Hertfordshire, where we face Boreham Wood at the Mangata Developments Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick off).

The Wood have enjoyed a tremendous first campaign back in the National League, and Luke Garrard’s side occupy 4th place, just four points behind 3rd placed Carlisle United. On Tuesday evening, Boreham Wood were crowned National League Cup champions, defeating West Ham U21’s on penalties.

Three former Heed players turn out for the Hertfordshire side, popular academy product Tom White joined from Morecambe in the summer, while Regan Booty made his move from Barrow permanent in January. Veteran defender Chris Bush spent one season on Tyneside during the 2012/13 campaign, and has been a mainstay of the Boreham Wood rearguard over the last few seasons.

We’ve Met Before

In the most recent meeting between these two sides, Boreham Wood returned to Hertfordshire with all three points, despite playing most of the game with 10-men.

Zak Brunt’s penalty just five minutes into the contest gave The Wood a perfect start on Tyneside, before Joe Newton was sent off just after the half-hour. As Gateshead pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Brunt grabbed his and Boreham Woods second goal in the 76th minute, before Regan Booty scored an audacious third in stoppage time, from the half way line.

Match Report: Gateshead FC

Gateshead remained in the relegation zone after a disappointing afternoon at Boreham Wood, suffering a 3-0 defeat.

An early opener from Leon Ayinde, followed by a Zak Brunt double, proved too much for Rob Elliot’s side in Hertfordshire.

There was one change to the Gateshead line-up that beat Wealdstone on Tuesday night, with Josh Anifowose replacing Harry Chapman on the flank.

Boreham Wood named three former Heed players in their starting 11 with Chris Bush, Tom White and Regan Booty.

Ayinde was quick off the mark, scoring his first goal for Luke Garrard’s side on 13 minutes after latching onto a long ball and slotting past Adam Desbois.

Boreham Wood continued to look dangerous as Ayinde fired wide at close-range, while Brunt hit over from distance.

Their advantage was eventually doubled on 38 minutes, when Brunt’s curling effort bounced off a Gateshead defender and hit the back of the net.

And just seconds into the second half, Brunt bagged another after tucking away Ayinde’s cross for the Wood.

Ayinde rattled the crossbar and Erico Sousa fired wide as the game went on and, despite five changes, Gateshead were unable to restore hope.

It will be another quick turnaround for Rob Elliot’s side, who turn their attention to Tuesday’s home fixture against York City.

Gateshead: Desbois, Radcliffe, Storey, Nicholson, Richardson, Anifowose (Chadwick 75’), John, Bowen (Home 68’), Ward (Chapman 68’), Gilsenan (Moore 60’), Boatswain (Amantchi 60’)

Subs (not used): Leech, Ferguson

Goals: Ayinde (13’), Brunt (38’, 46’)

Attendance: 1,054 (65 Gateshead)
