Next up on the road for the Heed is a 370-mile trip to Lincolnshire, where we take on Boston United at The Jakemans Community Stadium on Saturday, April 26 (3pm kick off).

Boston United come into this game two places and four points above the relegation zone, in 19th. The Pilgrims have been in resurgent form in the second half of the season, having lost only six times in the league since New Year’s Day.

One of those defeats came in their last game – a 3-2 defeat away at Solihull Moors. Prior to that game, Boston had won their last three matches, conceding only one goal in the process.

We’ve Met Before

In the most recent league meeting between these two sides in September 2024, goals from Ben Radcliffe and Owen Oseni secured three points for Gateshead on Tyneside.

Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Defeat at Boston saw Gateshead drop out of the Vanarama National League play-off places for the first time this season with one game remaining.

Keaton Ward had put the hosts in front before Luke Hannant levelled things up six minutes later, only for substitute James Gale to restore the home side’s lead before half time.

A goalless second 45 meant Gateshead’s season will go to the final day, with a win at home to Southend United required to finish in the top seven.

Carl Magnay made three changes from Easter Monday’s defeat at Hartlepool United, re-introducing George Shelvey, Jamie Bramwell and Frank Nouble to the starting 11 at The Jakemans Community Stadium.

The home side would gain an early lead to boost their survival hopes however, with Ward capitalising on a defensive error to slot high into Shelvey’s net and put Boston in front.

Gateshead responded in kind though to draw level six minutes later through top scorer Hannant, who slammed Jovan Malcolm’s cross past Cameron Gregory to erase The Pilgrims’ advantage.

There were very few chances of note until Boston netted a second on 35 minutes to go back in front, with substitute Gale – who replaced the injured Jacob Hazel mere minutes earlier – firing past Shelvey to leave Gateshead chasing the game once more.

Boston would have Gregory to thank for preserving their one-goal buffer going into half time when he denied Malcolm’s header with a point-blank save at his back post, while at the other end Shelvey blocked Gale to deny him a second.

The Heed gained a hold on possession as Boston looked to shut up shop in the second 45, with Gateshead’s only chance of a clear opportunity halted by Brad Nicholson’s last-ditch challenge as Nouble looked to race through on goal.

Kenton Richardson struck the post with a deft header from Regan Booty’s corner just after the hour mark, and later sent a free header wide of the far post after Booty had picked him out in the centre of the penalty area once more.

Nouble and Malcolm would send efforts wayward of the mark late on in Gateshead’s vain efforts to salvage a point, leaving The Heed to return to Tyneside empty handed.

Defeat at Boston – coupled with Southend United’s win over Wealdstone in the late kick off – means Magnay’s side must beat The Shrimpers at Gateshead International Stadium on the final day to compete in this season’s play-offs.
