Substitutes
Substitutes
Gateshead earned their first Enterprise National League win in over a month with a 2-1 victory at Braintree Town.
A blistering start from The Heed saw Kain Adom and Kyle Hurst put them two ahead at half time, before the hosts halved the deficit just after the hour mark through Terrell Works.
A late barrage of balls into the box was withstood by Gateshead however, who took three points back to Tyneside to move up to 15th place.
Alun Armstrong was dealt a difficult hand within an hour of kick off when Jacob Butterfield was withdrawn from the starting 11 through illness, and replaced by Josh Home to leave only five substitutes from an available seven.
Gateshead’s start made those in attendance soon forget that though as they took the lead within three minutes when Ben Williams – making his first league start – picked out Adom with a diagonal ball to the far post, before the winger lashed home for his seventh goal of the league season.

That advantage was doubled with 17 minutes on the clock, with Hurst finishing off a move again started by Williams, who stepped into midfield and combined with the front line to allow Curtis Edwards to put a ball across the six-yard box for Hurst to slot home.
Armstrong’s side kept control for the remainder of the opening 45 to go into the break two ahead, with Connor Pani’s 20-yard effort and a Braintree strike both whistling wide of the mark.
Braintree emerged with more purpose after the interval in search of a route back into the game and found the first of the two required when Works squeezed a shot past Tiernan Brooks at the near post, leaving Gateshead with half an hour to protect their lead.
Substitute Harry Chapman almost restored The Heed’s two-goal buffer with just under 20 minutes to go when his deflected shot was parried wide by Mason Terry at full stretch, shortly after Jacob Pinnington sent an effort wide for the hosts.
Braintree claimed they had scored an equaliser into injury time when a goalmouth scramble saw a mass of bodies crowd around the ball on the goal line, though the referee was quick to dismiss appeals despite a number of home shirts running away in celebration in an effort to convince him otherwise.
Gateshead still threatened on the counter late on though, and could have wrapped things up had Adom not struck over the crossbar when he raced through to goal, though it mattered little as the full time whistle blew to hand the visitors a much needed three points.
