Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead’s seven-game unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Bromley in the final game of September.

All four of the game’s goals came in the second half, with Michael Cheek putting the hosts in front before Marcus Dinanga levelled, only for Byron Webster and a second from Cheek to seal the result.

Mike Williamson named an unchanged side from Tuesday’s win over Oxford City, though would be forced into a first half change after Kyran Lofthouse clashed heads with Besart Topalloj 14 minutes in.

Lofthouse looked destined to bury Greg Olley’s lofted ball to the back post, only for the Bromley defender to launch himself in harms’ way, leading to both players being withdrawn in the opening 45.

Gateshead dominated the large majority of the first half at Hayes Lane, finding Dinanga in behind the Bromley defence on numerous occasions, though goalkeeper Grant Smith proved a difficult foe.

The forward was thwarted twice by the Bromley stopper at his near post, and came inches away from connecting with Regan Booty’s ball across goal towards the end of the half with Smith stranded.

The Heed continued to push forward in the second half and thought they had taken the lead five minutes after the restart, only for Jordan Hunter’s strike to be disallowed after Dinanga was judged to have blocked the goalkeeper’s view from an offside position.

Cheek then capitalised on a loose pass at the back to put Bromley in front with a rare sight of goal, and from then on affairs become more closely contested.

Dinanga finally found a way through with 70 minutes on the clock though, drifting in behind the defence and stabbing over the line under pressure from Bromley defenders to equalise.

Four minutes later though, and Bromley had re-taken the lead, with Webster escaping his marker in the area and sending a powerful header past Archie Mair.

Luke Hannant and Stephen Wearne combined at the other end to come inches away from a second equaliser, but the former’s cross proved a touch too high and Wearne headed over from point-blank range.

Gateshead’s search for a second saw the ball remain in Bromley’s half for much of the remainder of the game, leading to Lewis Leigh’s dismissal following a late challenge on Ed Francis.

Robbie Tinkler came closest to restoring parity when his 30-yard rocket smashed against the crossbar, only for a ball over the top immediately on the counter to send Cheek through for his second in injury time.
