Gateshead’s unbeaten start to the National League season came to an end in the form of a 7-1 defeat at Dagenham & Redbridge.
An early double put the hosts two ahead before Owen Oseni forced Paul Kalambayi to turn across his own line to make it 2-1 at the break, before five second half goals saw three points stay in Dagenham.
Rob Elliot re-introduced Tiernan Brooks to the starting line-up following his absence while on international duty with Ireland U21s, while Tom Allan returned to the bench after serving his one-game suspension.
The home side began with more impetus and took the lead four minutes in through Dion Pereira, who prodded Junior Morias’ lay-off into the back of the net from close range after Josh Rees had found Morias at the far post.
Jacob Butterfield curled wide of goal at the other end before Dagenham made it two on 16 minutes, with Rees this time the man to convert as he chested Tom Eastman’s ball across the line.
It took until just after the half an hour mark for Gateshead to answer back, which they did via a slice of fortune as Luke Hannant’s cross for Oseni was helped over the line by Daggers defender Kalambayi.
The home side had goalkeeper Elliot Justham to thank for preserving their lead three minutes later when he rushed out to block Ben Worman’s shot one-on-one, before later holding Kain Adom’s effort from the edge of the box.
The Daggers stopper was in action twice with the first three minutes of the second half to keep Oseni and Butterfield out, with both Heed men denied from 20 yards.
It was then Brooks’ turn to do the same at the other end shortly afterwards, first saving a long-range strike from Morias before tipping Eastman’s powerful drive over the bar from close range.
Morias would be the one to beat Brooks with 64 minutes on the clock to make it three, curling into the far corner after Worman had been robbed of possession in the Gateshead half.
The Heed looked for an immediate response and came close when Regan Booty charged through on goal, only to be denied by a last-ditch challenge from Harry Phipps as he looked to pull the trigger.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty for handball with a number of black shirts sliding in to block shots inside the box, which Pereira converted to make it four, two minutes before Morias scored a carbon copy of his first to add a fifth.
Josh Umerah headed past Brooks to make it six on 76 minutes, while at the other end Mark Beck was denied a tap-in by a last-ditch block and Booty struck the crossbar with a cross into the box.
Rees scored a seventh on the counter-attack moments before the referee blew for full time, with the result seeing Gateshead drop to fifth in the National League table.
