Ten-man Gateshead were narrowly defeated by Dorking Wanderers in a game light on clear chances at Meadowbank.
Regan Booty’s dismissal following a late challenge midway through the first half had the odds against The Heed early on, with Charlie Carter’s 43rd minute goal ultimately proving decisive.
Joe Grayson was re-introduced to the side following an enforced absence through concussion protocol, while Rob Elliot also brought Eddie Beach back into the fold after last weekend’s Isuzu FA Trophy fourth round win.
Proceedings began tentatively with neither side able to muster a meaningful effort on goal early on, as Seb Bowerman curled a 20-yarder wide for Dorking before Jordan Hunter saw a shot deflect past Harrison Male’s post at the other end.
The game’s key moment came with 24 minutes gone when Gateshead were reduced to 10 men following Booty’s challenge in the centre of the park, which was deemed to be over-zealous by the match officials.
Dorking’s next shot on target proved to be the decisive one, as Carter found a way past Beach at the back post to hand his side the lead at half time, with the offside flag denying Jason Prior another for the hosts just before the whistle.
Despite being down a man however, Gateshead showed promise in the second 45. Marcus Dinanga was found by a pinpoint Luke Hannant free-kick and headed past the far post, before Connor McBride turned past two men on the edge of the box and crashed a shot against the woodwork.
Hannant was then denied by Male from close range shortly afterwards, with the Dorking goalkeeper reacting in time to parry his near-post effort, before Dinanga blasted over the bar after racing onto a lofted ball forward.
Beach was on hand to keep Dorking from netting a second at the other end when he parried Alfie Rutherford’s shot away, with Louis Storey then throwing himself in front of the follow up.
Both nets went untouched until the final whistle though, leaving Gateshead eighth in the National League table.
