Match Preview: Gateshead Soul

Next up on the road for The Heed is a trip to Eastleigh, following our 3-1 win away at Solihull on Saturday. It’s a 645-mile round trip from Gateshead to the Silverlake Stadium, the home of The Spitfires.

Eastleigh have been on a decent run of form, having won their last three games, they sit just outside the play-offs in eighth, on 47 points. Under the stewardship of Kelvin Davis, Eastleigh are looking to better their 13th placed finish last season.

In the most recent meeting between these two sides, the Heed won in dramatic fashion, with Louis Storey netting in the 90th minute, sealing a 2-1 win on Tyneside. The Silverlake has been a happy hunting ground for The Heed in recent years, with a 5-2 and 6-0 win in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Travel & Ticketing Information

The Silverlake Stadium is in quite an isolated area, just outside Eastleigh itself, the stadium is near Southampton Airport.

If you’re heading down by rail, the nearest station is Southampton Airport Parkway, served by Southwestern Railway (trains from London Waterloo), and CrossCountry (trains from Reading).

From Southampton Airport Parkway Station, it’s a 25-minute walk through the Lakeside Country Park to the stadium. There aren’t any direct buses from the Railway Station to the stadium, but there is a large taxi rank at the front of the station.

If you’re travelling by car, exit junction 13 and turn right into Leigh Road. Continue to crossroads and turn right at traffic lights into Passfield Avenue. Drive past Fleming Park sports centre on your right and continue to the end of Passfield Avenue. At the end of the road take the second exit and at the next roundabout take the first exit into Stoneham Lane. Continue down Stoneham Lane, taking the first exit on two roundabouts then on the third roundabout take the first exit, then take your next left and you will find the Silverlake Stadium 100 yards on the left-hand side.

Parking at the stadium is reserved for those who are in possession of a blue badge. If you are in receipt of a blue badge, you should contact Eastleigh FC in advance, so you can be added to the car park list.

Anyone wishing to park at the Silverlake Stadium can park in the Lower Hardmoor Car Park, which is in the field behind the South Stand of the stadium and is accessible via the road next to the motorway bridge entrance on Stoneham Lane. Parking spaces are available at £10 per space, by cash or card, and is on a first-come-first served basis.

Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead were forced to settle for a point as an injury-time penalty denied them three points at Eastleigh.

Tyrell Sellars-Fleming had seemingly handed The Heed a third consecutive win with his first goal for the club in the 86th minute, only for Jake Taylor to level from the spot two minutes after the regular 90.

Carl Magnay made four changes to the side that started the 3-1 win at Solihull Moors three days prior, with Tiernan Brooks and Jean Belehouan starting for the first time since their injury lay-offs while Ben Worman and Liam Humbles returned to the side.

Both sides played a part in an attritional opening 45 minutes at the Silverlake Stadium, with Jovan Malcolm testing Eastleigh goalkeeper Joe McDonnell at his near post, before Jesurun Uchegbulam fired wide from close range at the other end.

Clear opportunities proved difficult to come by for Gateshead in the first half with blue shirts keen to block at the first sight of danger, denying Sellars-Fleming and Malcolm in quick succession 10 minutes before the break.

The second 45 saw The Heed gain more control in possession, though chances remained few and far between for both sides in Hampshire.

Noa Boutin squandered Eastleigh’s best chance with the game still goalless on 73 minutes, side-footing wide of Brooks right-hand post from 12 yards out after his team-mates had gained ground on the left flank.

It was Gateshead who took the lead though with five minutes left on the clock when Regan Booty’s corner was flicked towards Luke Hannant, whose 25-yard volley was nodded past McDonnell by Sellars-Fleming for his first goal since joining on loan from Hull City.

The Heed’s lead would be cancelled out from the penalty spot in injury time however, with Belehouan judged to have brought an Eastleigh man down at the back post from a long throw.

Taylor stepped up to slot past Brooks from 12 yards and reduce Gateshead’s takings to one point, keeping The Heed fourth in the National League.
