Gateshead look to return to winning form when they travel to FC Halifax Town on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm kick off).

The Heed tasted defeat on home turf for the first time this season last weekend against Woking, and sit 10th in the National League table prior to kick off.

Mike Williamson’s side have scored the joint-second highest amount of goals in the division (12) ahead of the trip to Halifax – a side whom Gateshead have been frustrated by historically.

Eleven of the 15 meetings between the two since Halifax’s reformation in 2008 have ended in a draw, while the most recent clash saw Gateshead defeated in the FA Trophy final at Wembley Stadium in May.

The Shaymen were held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Oxford City in their last home game, before coming from behind to take a point by the same scoreline at Solihull Moors last Friday.

Gateshead have scored five goals in their two away games this season, and forward Marcus Dinanga is currently joint-top of the scoring charts after netting his fourth of the season at the weekend.

Heed View

“We will always play the way we play because we believe that’s the best way to win games,” said assistant manager, Ian Watson.

“There was loads of the performance that I really loved [against Woking], and I actually think it’s going to be a real good thing for us because there was lots learned.”

Opposition View

“Tactically I think the lads who played at Solihull could certainly cope with what Gateshead will throw at us but physically we might have to make one or two changes just to keep it fresh,” said Halifax boss, Chris Millington.

“I’d say [Gateshead are] better [than in the FA Trophy final], I think they’re controlling possession even more, they’re moving the ball incredibly well.

“But likewise, if you’re talking about styles of teams, our combative, organised, hard-working style is even better as well, and we’ve got more athleticism, so any mistakes they make with their possession we can punish them with our athleticism and our ability to counter very quickly.

Gateshead battled for a point despite being reduced to 10 men at FC Halifax Town.

In a game light on goalscoring chances, The Heed were forced to dig in with a man disadvantage after Luke Hannant was shown a second yellow card midway through the second half and took a point back to Tyneside in what was the 12th draw in 16 meetings between the two sides since 2008.

Mike Williamson made six changes with only one day in between Saturday’s defeat against Woking and the trip to The Shay, handing first starts of the season to Aidan Rutledge, Billy Chadwick, Tom Allan, Carl Magnay and Joe Grayson as well as bringing Robbie Tinkler back into the starting 11.

Arguably the best chance of the entire game came Rutledge’s way after just three minutes, with the striker collecting possession in the Halifax half before driving towards goal and seeing his 20-yard effort tipped wide by Sam Johnson.

The home side registered little in the way of attacking intent during the first 45, with Jack Hunter’s wayward shot from 25 yards and a direct corner which was parried away by Archie Mair in the opening 10 minutes the closest they came to goal.

Carl Magnay was withdrawn due to injury with six minutes to go before the break and replaced by Kenton Richardson, before Hannant was shown his first yellow card for reaction after being blocked off on the edge of the Halifax box.

Mair was called upon to make a fine save from Jo Cummings’ header 13 minutes into the second half as Halifax began to venture forward, but the game’s dynamic shifted when Hannant was dismissed for a second yellow card having blocked off Tylor Golden on the counter-attack.

Gateshead defended resolutely despite the man disadvantage for the remaining half an hour, with Halifax gaining more possession but threatening little in terms of goalscoring opportunities.

Rob Harker couldn’t quite connect with a ball slipped in behind as time wore on, and his proved to be the best chance before the full time whistle sounded.
