Substitutes
Gateshead were dealt a convincing four-goal defeat at Forest Green Rovers on Enterprise National League match day seven.
The Heed went into half time a goal down after Kyle McAllister put the home side ahead just before the break, before a quickfire two from Ricardo Rees and Jayden Clarke and an injury time Oli Ewing strike sealed a fifth defeat from seven for Gateshead.
There were full National League debuts for Harrison Holgate and Jordy Hiwula at The New Lawn, while latest signing Freddie Issaka started from the bench after joining on loan from Plymouth Argyle in midweek.
Forest Green dominated possession early on and tested Pete Jameson’s reflexes twice in the opening 15 minutes, with The Heed’s stopper saving a wobbling strike from Kyle Kelly before the FGR man was denied at the near post moments later.
Three Gateshead men – Alex Lankshear, Luke Supyk and Jack Robinson – went into the book in the opening half an hour or so as Forest Green retained the ball, but it took until two minutes before half time for the hosts to break the deadlock.
A loose ball from Rocco Coyle was cut out on the halfway line allowing Forest Green to break at pace, with two short passes across the 18-yard line setting up McAllister to fire into the bottom-left corner and give his side the lead.
The Heed made three changes early in the second half in an effort to gain some control, with Martin Smith, Fenton John and Issaka coming on – the latter for his debut.
Smith sent a deflected shot over shortly afterwards, with the resulting corner seeing Forest Green goalkeeper Ethan Ross claw Michael Spellman’s ball into the box off his line as Gateshead searched for a leveller.
Seven minutes later, Forest Green were 3-0 up. The second goal a result of a free-flowing move in the box which saw McAllister turn provider for Rees to find the net, three minutes before Clarke squeezed a low shot through Jameson to all but put the game to bed.
Supyk sent a deflected shot behind for a corner in Gateshead’s only foray forward in the remaining 20 minutes or so, while at the other end Ewing curled a 20-yarder past Jameson to make it four and end a rough afternoon for The Heed.
