Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead came from behind to earn a final day win over Bromley and end the Vanarama National League season in sixth place.

The Heed went one down after 12 minutes in one of few chances in the opening 45, as Olufela Olomola volleyed in from close range after being picked out at the back post.

A late double turned Gateshead’s fortunes around however, with Greg Olley levelling the game up before Louis Storey slammed home with two minutes to go to secure three points and a top seven finish.

Both sides made a host of changes with play-off spots already secured heading into the final day, and it was the visitors who took an initial advantage with 12 minutes on the clock when a deep cross was met by Olomola at the back post, who converted from close range.

That would be the sole shot on target in the first half, with Kain Adom and Luke Hannant sending shots wide of the mark for Gateshead while Byron Webster and Will Davies sent efforts wayward for Bromley.

The second half saw a final day debut with Brandon Haunstrup introduced following a head injury to Will Johnson, and The Heed asserted control from there on out as they looked for a route back into the game.

Kieron Evans sent two efforts narrowly wide within the first five minutes of the restart, before Lewis Thomas made a double save from Joe Grayson and Adom to keep Gateshead out.

Thomas was on hand again to claw away Hannant’s lofted ball towards the back post, which looked to be dipping into the far corner, before then saving from Adom once more at his near post.

Bromley would then be awarded a highly controversial penalty with 71 minutes played, with Storey penalised for a supposed foul on Jude Arthurs.

James Montgomery would then do as he has done on many occasions in a Gateshead shirt, saving Louis Dennis’ penalty low to his left to keep his side in the game.

Six minutes later, Gateshead made that count, as Grayson picked out Olley inside the box for the captain to lob an on-rushing Thomas and level the game up heading into the final 10 minutes.

Adom and Dajaune Brown would go close to an equaliser shortly afterwards, with the former’s deflected shot from 20 yards hitting the post before Brown turned and fired narrowly wide of the near post.

The equaliser finally came with just two minutes to go through the unlikely source of Storey, with Grayson picking out Brown at the back post with his free kick before the forward prodded back across goal for the defender to volley home from six yards out.

Storey’s strike secured all three points on the final day, sealing Gateshead’s highest National League finish since 2014 as they ended the campaign in sixth place.
