Match Report: Will Brown

Gateshead secured a huge three points in the relegation battle against Oldham Athletic at Gateshead International Stadium.

An early own goal by Liam Hogan was cancelled out by a Will Sutton strike before a late Marcus Dinanga goal allowed Gateshead to get their seventh win in the league.

Mike Williamson would make just the one change to the team that played against Southend in the previous fixture, Aaron Martin was unavailable for selection after receiving a red card in his last game, while Callum Whelan was named to make his Gateshead debut.

The first chance fell in the sixth minute, Greg Olley showed his brilliance when his back-heeled pass played in Adam Campbell whose eventual shot was saved by Magnus Norman

Gateshead broke the deadlock one minute later; Campbell drilled a low-driven cross into the box which former Gateshead defender Liam Hogan stuck a foot onto and poked the ball into his own net.

Campbell looked fired up for this match and nearly came close to get Gateshead’s second, the attacker cut inside before he unleashed a shot just outside the box that went wide in the 14th minute.

Gateshead were nearly gifted a goal in the 28th minute, Josef Yarney back pass fell short which allowed Campbell to have a free shot, but Norman made a crucial save to keep the deficit to one.

In the 35th minute Olley floated a cross to the near-post which Marcus Dinanga headed towards the far corner but Norman once again was there to make a save and push the ball out for a corner. Olley found Louis Storey in open space with the corner but headed the ball over.

After the break the visitors pulled one back, a loose ball on the edge of the box was drilled in by Will Sutton in the 54th minute.

Alex Reid should have given Oldham the lead in the 62nd minute after he rounded Filip Marschall before he hit the side of the net.

A deep free-kick sent the ball into the box where it found Robbie Tinkler who headed over in the 69th minute.

Dinanga got his debut goal for the Heed in 80th minute, after a scramble for the ball in the box the striker was there to poke the ball into the net.
