Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead closed out their first week of pre-season action with a win over Championship side Sunderland at Gateshead International Stadium.

Owen Oseni’s first half double, either side of Jack Clarke’s penalty for the visitors, saw The Heed return to home soil with a winning performance and end the opening week of pre-season with two victories from two.

Rob Elliot named a starting 11 made up of established first team names, alongside three summer signings, to face Regis Le Bris’ side in their first day of match action under the Frenchman’s tenure.

It was Elliot’s men who made the more promising start of the two sides on a rain-soaked playing surface on Tyneside, with Oseni and Callum Whelan both sending efforts wide of goal early on.

Greg Olley registered the game’s first effort on target with 13 minutes on the clock when he was fed inside the area by Oseni, only for Anthony Patterson to race off his line and smother the Gateshead skipper’s strike.

Gateshead took the lead six minutes later though, as Whelan re-directed Regan Booty’s set-piece into the six-yard box where Joe Grayson’s flick was pounced upon by Oseni at the back post for his second goal in as many games.

Sunderland were handed the opportunity to level nine minutes later when Nazariy Rusyn was brought down by Booty in the penalty area, allowing Clarke to step up and slot home from the spot to bring things back to square one.

The visitors began to assert themselves after equalising and could have gone in front when Rusyn was found free in the box, only for Kenton Richardson to clear the Ukranian’s goal-bound effort off the line with a well-placed header.

Gateshead capitalised on the counter with one minute to go in the opening 45, with Richardson’s ball out to the left wing taken down by Tom Allan and fired across the six-yard box for Oseni to dispatch from close range.

Both sides made a host of changes after the hour mark, with Elliot introducing a mixture of trialists, academy players and summer signings for their first taste of action at Gateshead International Stadium.

One of those trialists could have found a third goal when he was sent one-on-one with Patterson only to be denied by the Sunderland stopper, shortly before Olley was thwarted from a similar position by the visiting number one.

The Black Cats made efforts of their own to find an equaliser at the other end with a number of strikes sent wide of the mark, but it proved to be The Heed’s day as they saw the 90 minutes out to record a second pre-season victory.

Gateshead: Brooks (Trialist, 61’), Tinkler (Colledge, 73’), Richardson (Bramwell, 66’), Grayson (Trialist, 59’), Hannant (Williams, 73’), Allan (Thompson, 59’), Booty (Ford, 81’), Olley (Lowery, 79’), Whelan (John, 66’), Oseni (Rutledge, 59’), McGowan (Trialist, 61’).
