Gateshead earned two points in the National League Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Sunderland U21, following a draw in normal time at Gateshead International Stadium.
Carl Magnay opted for a mixture of regular first team names and rotation in the starting XI last Wednesday evening, with Josh Home, Jovan Malcolm and Oli Thompson handed starting spots alongside regular starters in Luke Hannant, Regan Booty and Ben Radcliffe.
It was Hannant who struck the first blow after a goalless opening 45 minutes, picking up Malcolm’s through ball before slamming home, with Malcolm netting himself four minutes later to hand Gateshead a two-goal advantage.
Sunderland fought back however, with experienced first team midfielder Adil Aouchiche pulling one back on the rebound five minutes before young forward Trey Ogunsuyi equalised as Radcliffe’s clearance ricocheted off him and in.
Sunderland’s late pressure couldn’t force a third goal, taking penalties to decide whom the extra point would go to.
Owen Mason’s save from Abdoullah Ba handed Gateshead the initiative in the shoot-out, allowing Radcliffe to slot home the fifth penalty from five and decide affairs.
