Match Preview: Gateshead Soul

Next up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a trip to Rochdale, following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against AFC Fylde. It’s a 266-mile round trip to the Crown Oil Arena for the travelling Heed Army on Tuesday night.

Rochdale come into this game sitting just six points adrift of the play-offs, sitting in 10th position in the Vanarama National League. The Dale are on a six-match winless run in the league, with their last league win coming back in January, an emphatic 4-0 thumping of Yeovil. Rochdale did taste victory in their most recent fixture, a 2-0 win over Altrincham, sealing their place in the FA Trophy semi-final.

We’ve Met Before

In the most recent meeting between these two sides, Rochdale returned to the North West with all three points, despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the second half. Robbie Tinkler’s own goal just before the hour mark was the only goal in a game otherwise dominated by Gateshead, who couldn’t find a way past Rochdale’s stubborn defence.

Travel & Ticketing Information

The Crown Oil Arena is located to the west of Rochdale Town Centre and is roughly a 20 minute walk from the local transport interchange.

The nearest National Rail station is Rochdale (served by Northern), with trains from York, Leeds and Manchester City Centre. Manchester’s MetroLink tram service also serves Rochdale, from Manchester City Centre, although this option takes considerably longer than the train.

You cannot catch a train direct from Newcastle Central to Rochdale, so our recommend route would be to catch a service to York (LNER, TransPennine Express & CrossCountry) or Leeds (TransPennine Express and CrossCountry only), then changing on to a Northern service to Rochdale.

If you’re travelling by car, approach Rochdale via the M62. Exit the motorway at Junction 20 and follow the signs for Rochdale A627(M). Bear left at the first roundabout you come to on the A627(M), passing B & Q on your right. You will quickly approach another roundabout at which point you will pick up signs for ‘Spotland Stadium’. Alternatively, carry straight on across this roundabout (2nd exit) and follow the road for approximately two miles: The Crown Oil Arena will be visible on the right hand side.

Parking at the stadium is reserved for staff and players, and the club recommends parking at the local high school Oulderhill Community School, Greave Avenue, OL11 5EF which is roughly a 15 minute walk from the ground. Many side streets surrounding the ground have parking restrictions, and it is highly likely that the surrounding area will be patrolled by a parking warden on a match day, so please be respectful of local residents and parking restrictions, if you are travelling in the car.

Tickets can be purchased online here, with Gateshead fans housed in Block U of the Pearl Street End.

Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead were dealt defeat by a late goal on the road at Rochdale.

Carl Magnay’s depleted side held out for 83 minutes before substitute Tarryn Allarakhia converted a loose ball from a corner to see three points head Rochdale’s way, leaving The Heed fourth in the Vanarama National League table.

Gateshead’s trip to the Crown Oil Arena saw Dan Jones return to the starting 11 after a brief absence through injury, though Regan Booty missed out of the squad through fitness issues of his own while Tyrell Sellars-Fleming and Jean Belehouan could only make the bench.

The most notable chance of an otherwise quiet first half came Rochdale’s way within the opening six minutes, seeing striker Kairo Mitchell denied by a strong hand from Tiernan Brooks from just inside the Gateshead box.

Chances were few and far between for both sides throughout the opening 45, with the visitors’ opportunities seeing Jovan Malcolm hit the side netting before Liam Humbles sent a low shot wide of the near post.

Rochdale gained the upper hand in possession terms after the break and again came close early on in the half, this time through ex-Heed man Connor McBride when he curled against the far post from 20 yards out.

The hosts’ possession didn’t quite translate into chances created though, with Gateshead keeping Rochdale at arm’s length until the final 10 minutes, when Magnay’s side were broken through from a set-piece.

An initial clearance from Jones fell towards the back post and was played into the centre of the box, leading to a scrappy few moments which culminated in Allarakhia converting from close range to hand his side the advantage on 83 minutes.

That goal proved decisive in Greater Manchester, though Gateshead held their spot in fourth place in the National League despite defeat.

Substitutes: Bond, Bramwell, Milmore, Sellars-Fleming.
