Next up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a trip to Rochdale.

Following Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Eastleigh, we make the 266-mile round trip to the Crown Oil Arena on Wednesday night.

Rochdale have enjoyed the perfect start to their National League campaign, with two victories in their opening two games, and come into this game having defeated local rivals Altrincham 2-1 on Saturday.

We’ve Met Before

In the most recent meeting between these two sides, Rochdale claimed all three points at the Crown Oil Arena back in March – Tarryn Allarakhia’s 82nd minute strike is all that separated the two sides in an otherwise dull affair in the North West.

Travel & Ticketing Information

The Crown Oil Arena is located to the west of Rochdale Town Centre and is roughly a 20 minute walk from the local transport interchange.

The nearest National Rail station is Rochdale (served by Northern), with trains from York, Leeds and Manchester City Centre. Manchester’s MetroLink tram service also serves Rochdale, from Manchester City Centre, although this option takes considerably longer than the train.

You cannot catch a train direct from Newcastle Central to Rochdale, so our recommend route would be to catch a service to Leeds (TransPennine Express or CrossCountry), then changing on to a Northern service to Rochdale.

If you’re travelling by car, approach Rochdale via the M62. Exit the motorway at Junction 20 and follow the signs for Rochdale A627(M). Bear left at the first roundabout you come to on the A627(M), passing B&Q on your right. You will quickly approach another roundabout at which point you will pick up signs for ‘Spotland Stadium’. Alternatively, carry straight on across this roundabout (2nd exit) and follow the road for approximately 2 miles: The Crown Oil Arena will be visible on the right hand side.

Parking at the stadium is reserved for staff and players, and the club recommends parking at the local high school Oulderhill Community School, Greave Avenue, OL11 5EF which is roughly a 15 minute walk from the ground. Many side streets surrounding the ground have parking restrictions, and it is highly likely that the surrounding area will be patrolled by a parking warden on a matchday, so please be respectful of local residents and parking restrictions, if you are travelling in the car.

Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead’s first midweek game of the 2025/26 Enterprise National League season ended in defeat by four at Rochdale.

Two first-half goals from Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Mani Dieseruvwe saw the hosts two up at the break, before a further double from Devante Rodney and Connor McBride sealed affairs late on.

Alun Armstrong named an unchanged squad following The Heed’s 2-0 win at Eastleigh last weekend, though Rochdale would gain the upper hand during the early stages at the Crown Oil Arena.

Rodney sent wide from 18 yards with the evening’s first shot with 11 minutes on the clock, moments before Ebanks-Landell would power home to put the hosts ahead from a corner.

Kain Adom and Dom Telford linked up at the other end in Gateshead’s efforts to restore parity, but the former’s cross would go behind for a goal kick with Telford’s touch not quite able to trap the loose ball.

Rochdale would control possession for much of the opening 45 before making it two with two minutes until the interval as Dieseruvwe converted first time from a right-sided ball into the box.

The forward was denied a second by a strong hand from Heed goalkeeper George Shelvey five minutes after the break as he tipped a goal-bound header over the bar, while at the other end David Ferguson and Adom both sent efforts wide from distance.

Rodney would make it three with 70 minutes gone after Shelvey had denied an initial strike from Aidan Barlow, following up to convert from inside the box.

Ex-Gateshead midfielder McBride came off the bench to score a fourth 10 minutes later, picking up a loose ball from a corner before firing into the far corner to leave Shelvey with little chance.

The Heed stopper was on hand to parry Tarryn Allarakhia’s curling effort late on to keep it at four – a scoreline which remained come the full time whistle shortly afterwards.
