Next up ‘On the Road’ for the Heed is a 620-mile round trip to South London, as we face Sutton United in the Enterprise National League on Saturday.

The U’s are one place above The Heed in 19th, with the same points tally, but a superior goal difference and are on a four-match unbeaten run in the league, beating Truro 3-2 in their most recent fixture.

We’ve Met Before

The most recent meeting between these two sides came in Feburary 2025, and was something of a goal-fest on Tyneside. Jack Roles and Jovan Malcolm put the Heed 2-0 up after 35 minutes, before Will Davies halfed the deficit on the brink of half time.

Sutton turned the game around dramatically in the second half, and found themselves 3-2 up on the hour with goals from Alex Kirk and Lewis Simper before Luke Hannant’s stunning strike made it 3-3, Jack Roles sealed the Gateshead win in the 80th minute, ending a topsy-turvy game at 4-3.

Travel & Ticketing Information

Gander Green Lane is located to the North of Sutton Town Centre, and is a two-minute walk from West Sutton Railway Station.

If you’re heading down by Rail, we would recommend catching an LNER service from Newcastle to London Kings Cross, then changing on to a Thameslink service from London St Pancras to West Sutton. Please note, due to engineering works between Durham and Northallerton, journey times are increased by 1 hour as trains divert via the Durham Coast Line.

If you are driving, travel along the M25 to junction 8. Then north on the A217 for about 15-20 minutes. Stay on the A217 to the traffic lights with the Cheam Road (A232) and turn right toward Sutton. Do not turn into Gander Green Lane, keep going until you reach the Sutton one-way system and turn left into St Nicholas Way and then left again into the Gibson Road municipal car park. It is then a relatively short walk down Collingwood Road to the away end of the stadium.

Away fans should park in Gibson Road, the local municipal car park. It takes no more than fifteen minutes to walk from Gibson Road to the stadium.

Tickets can be purchased ahead of the fixture, and are available online here, priced at:

Online (Available from now up to kick-off)

Adults – £21

Concession (62+, Student, Blue Light) – £16

14 – 17 – £8

Under 14 – £2

Tickets can be purchased from the ticket booth on the day, with all prices increased by £3.

Bars & Pubs

Supporters should note that there is no alcohol to be sold in the away end at Sutton United. As a result, away supporters have been designated The Robin Hood (52 West St, Sutton SM1 1SH) as an alternate venue.

Other options include:

Moon on the Hill, 5–9 Hill Road, Sutton, London, SM1 1DZ

Ebb & Flow, 59-61 High Street, Sutton, SM1 1DT

Match Report: Jack McGraghan

Gateshead fell to a fifth consecutive defeat in the Enterprise National League by a 4-2 scoreline at Sutton United.

The Heed had taken the lead five minutes in through Kian Pennant’s first goal for the club, though Sutton levelled going into half time with Jayden Harris’ flick on.

A four-minute double for the hosts – via Lewis Simper and Harris again – put them in front before Dom Telford gave Gateshead a chance on the rebound, though Jack Taylor had the final say with a fourth for The U’s in the eighth minute of injury time.

Alun Armstrong’s team selection was partially influenced by a raft of illness amongst the squad on Saturday morning, seeing Curtis Edwards, Fenton John and Tyrelle Newton excluded from the 18 despite travelling.

David Ferguson, Kenton Richardson and Max Melbourne were declared well enough to start at the VBS Community Stadium, while Aidan Elliott-Wheeler made his league debut after joining on loan this week.

Gateshead started brightly despite those issues, taking the lead with five minutes on the clock as Elliott-Wheeler found Pennant in the box for the forward to turn and fire into the left-hand corner with two touches for his first Heed goal.

Simper was first to test Tiernan Brooks in Sutton’s efforts to equalise when he went through on goal 23 minutes in, but was denied by the sprawling stopper at his near post.

Harris found the leveller just after the half-hour mark though, reacting instinctively to head a wayward shot past Brooks and make it one each.

Brooks was again called upon to deny Simper shortly afterwards when his fingertip stop denied the midfielder’s drive from 20 yards, before Pennant was agonisingly close to sliding home Ferguson’s cross into the six-yard box at the other end.

A quickfire double immediately after half time would leave Gateshead chasing for the rest of the game though, with Simper curling in from 25 yards out just one minute after the restart and Harris would score on the rebound four minutes later to make it 3-1.

Telford did reduce the deficit to one when he converted after Jacob Butterfield’s 20-yarder came back off the post, but The Heed didn’t create an opportunity to net an equaliser from then on.

Brooks made two saves to deny Sutton a fourth as the half wore on, before Taylor struck on the break in the 98th minute to seal Gateshead’s fate in South London.

Gateshead: Brooks, Elliott-Wheeler, Richardson (Flint, 70’), Melbourne (Williams, 65’), Ferguson, Butterfield, Home, Hurst (Chapman, 65’), Telford (Nouble, 85’), Adom, Pennant.

Substitutes: Leech, Grayson.

Yellow Cards: Telford (64’)

Sutton United: Sims, Eccleston, Muller (Jones, 81’), Pruti, Taylor, Jennings, J. Taylor, Simper, Harris (Bell, 81’), Ogbonna (Vorster, 90+9’), Crichlow (Vaz, 81’).

Substitutes: Reid, Tizzard, Njoku.

Goals: Harris (32’, 59’), Simper (46’), Taylor (90+8’)

Yellow Cards: J. Taylor (53’), Muller (56’)
