Tyrelle Newton reflected on the end of a ‘tough week’ following Gateshead’s 1-1 Emirates FA Cup fourth round qualifying draw at Hednesford Town.

The Heed went ahead in their opening FA Cup tie of the 2024/25 season through Newton’s 64th minute strike, only to be pegged back by Rob Stevenson’s goal for the hosts five minutes later.

Late pressure was to no avail for Gateshead, who now face a replay against The Pitmen on Tuesday, October 15 at Gateshead International Stadium.

“I’d say we were probably in control for the first half – second half we let it get away from us at points, but we did well in spells,” said Newton.

“It’s important that when I play I affect games.

“I’ve always wanted to score goals and create goals, especially when I’m out on the left.

“It’s been a tough week to be honest, but I think we just take it to Tuesday and right our wrongs from today.”

The Heed’s FA Cup tie at Keys Park was the third in Ben Clark’s current stint as interim manager, with Greg Olley and Jacob Butterfield assisting from both in the dugout and on the pitch.

Newton only has praise for the trio’s efforts since the departures of the club’s former management team, adding: “The management team were such a big part of what we do and are trying to keep doing.

“The job Greg, Clarky and Butts are doing is impeccable to try and get our head off everything that’s going on, but we’re just sticking together as a team.

“All we have to do now is focus on Tuesday, and take care of that.”
