Whelan joined the club on loan from Solihull Moors until the end of the season in February 2023, going on to make 13 appearances as Gateshead secured National League safety.
The midfielder returned on a permanent basis ahead of the 2023/24 season, signing a two-year deal on Tyneside, and emerged as one of the Heed’s standout performers in a memorable campaign.
Whelan scored seven goals and recorded four assists in 33 appearances from midfield after missing an early portion of the season due to injury, and was individually recognised as the National League’s Player of the Month in February 2024 before lifting the Isuzu FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium in May 2024.

Whelan continued to play an integral role in Gateshead’s side during the 2024/25 season, scoring six goals and recording three assists before joining Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee in January 2025.
