Callum Whelan has been named as the Vanarama National League’s February Player of the Month!
The midfielder scoops a February double having already been voted as the club’s Player of the Month by supporters, and now takes home the division’s award after playing an pivotal role in Gateshead’s fine form last month.
Whelan’s two goals and two assists – as well as his tireless work out of possession – helped The Heed rise to fifth place in the National League table at the end of the month, leaving a potential play-off place in his and his team-mates hands ahead of the final two months of the season.
“[Marcus] Dinanga had six [goals], and the strikers always nick it don’t they!” he said.
“It’s been my best month in a Gateshead shirt, I feel.
“I’ve been quite consistent in my performances and I think I was good, I did well and I worked hard.
“But yeah, Dinanga was in my ear about him scoring six, so I thought it would be close!
“It’s really nice to get voted for both, first from our fans and then the league.
“In February we had a really good month with some really good results, and individual awards are obviously really nice as well.”
