Carl Magnay has departed Gateshead Football Club to take on the position of first-team coach at MK Dons.
Magnay made 122 appearances for The Heed as a player across two separate spells and played a key role in the club’s most successful periods in recent memory, featuring in the Conference Premier play-off final in 2014 before returning to lift the 2021/22 National League North title and feature in Gateshead’s first-ever FA Trophy final in 2023.

After retiring from playing duties due to injury, Magnay transitioned into a coaching role alongside Rob Elliot and Louis Storey and guided Gateshead to a sixth-placed finish in the National League – the club’s highest placing in 10 years – and became the only person to be involved in all three of our Wembley Stadium appearances when he lifted the 2024 FA Trophy in May.

“Firstly, all at Gateshead FC would like to thank Carl for his efforts as both a player and coach across the last decade,” said Chairman, Neil Pinkerton.
“Although naturally we are disappointed to see Carl depart, we also recognise that this is an opportunity for him to progress his coaching career at a higher level, and as such we won’t stand in the way of him doing so.
“Carl has made an immense contribution to Gateshead Football Club in some of the most fondly spoken of periods in recent memory, and we wish him all the best in future.”
