Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm that David Ferguson has been named as club captain for the 2026/27 season.
‘Fergie’ will lead The Heed as skipper in his second season on Tyneside having racked up 45 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign at Gateshead, which ended in remarkable fashion as he helped guide his side to Enterprise National League survival against all odds.
The 32-year-old was ever-present throughout the 2025/26 season for Gateshead, beginning the season at left back before adapting to a central role in a back three and re-establishing himself in the starting 11.
Ferguson will now take on the role as club captain for the third time in his career, having previously done so at Blackpool and Hartlepool United, to wear the armband permanently on Tyneside after deputising temporarily last season.
Josh Home will act as vice-captain throughout 2026/27 as he enters his second full season as a Gateshead player, passing a half-century of appearances during a 2025/26 campaign in which he played 46 games across all competitions in midfield.

“Fergie is the stand-out captain, and I’m really looking forward to him leading the team out,” said manager, Lee Cattermole.
“Firstly, I think his career warrants it. He’s got the respect of the dressing room and he’s got the respect of the staff. Fergie is someone I’ve known for a long time, and he’s going to be an important player for the group.
“We’ve got more leaders in the group – I can hear the way they’re speaking to each other in training and the messages are good. I like the way the squad sounds day to day on the pitch, and Fergie is going to play a big part in that.”
