Gateshead FC Ladies can confirm Simon Johnson has made the difficult decision to step down from his position as manager to focus on other commitments with Gateshead FC.

Johnson took the helm in August 2021 ahead of Gateshead Ladies’ second season in existence, and oversaw the team’s promotion to the North East Regional Womens Football League as well as a run to the Vitality Women’s FA Cup third round qualifying in the club’s first ever entry into the competition.

As a result, Gateshead FC Ladies are currently in the process of recruiting a new manager.

In the interim period, first team assistant manager Ian Watson has stepped in to ensure Gateshead FC Ladies have the support they require, and he has the full support of Gateshead FC and its existing club staff.

Due to a number of factors, Gateshead FC Ladies have taken the difficult decision to forfeit the opening fixture of the North East Regional Womens Football League season against Washington AFC, originally scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 4.

Gateshead FC Ladies will be in a position to continue with the remainder of the season, and will provide a further update once a new manager has been appointed.
