Alex Nicholson feels Saturday’s dramatic win over Alfreton Town is a ‘brilliant result’.
The Heed secured three points with a dramatic injury time winner from Greg Olley, after Cedwyn Scott had equalised with 15 minutes to go.
“In terms of quality on the ball and the way we want to play, it wasn’t great,” said Nicholson.
“To get three points and come back from a goal down though is a brilliant result.
“I don’t think you can really doubt our character, we’ve got a good group and we’ve proved it today against a difficult opponent.
“We knew it was going to be that way going into it with the way they play and their physicality, we knew we’d have to stand up to it.
“Going a goal down into half time, the message was just to go out there and give it everything we’ve got and we’ve turned it around which everyone is delighted with.”
The win takes Gateshead up to ninth in the Vanarama National League North with a number of games in hand on teams above them.
Attention next turns to the Emirates FA Cup replay at Altrincham on Tuesday night, with a second round tie at home to Charlton Athletic awaiting the winners.
“We were really disappointed last weekend,” the vice-captain continued.
“To come back from that defeat with a positive result going into the replay is massive to try and gain a bit of momentum.”
