Watson has acted as assistant manager since January 2019, first taking up the role as part of Ben Clark’s coaching team, after spending a number of years as the club’s strength & conditioning coach.
He then continued in the role following the appointment of Mike Williamson as player-manager ahead of the 2019/20 season, helping the club reach the play-off semi final in a season curtailed by COVID-19.
Watson and player-manager Mike Williamson led Gateshead to their first league title since 1986 by lifting the 2021/22 Vanarama National League North title with one game to spare.
The pair then led the club to National League safety the following campaign, as well as reaching the FA Trophy final for the first time in Gateshead’s history in May 2023.
Watson departed alongside Mike Williamson and Chris Bell in October 2023, joining League Two side MK Dons.
