Wombwell arrived in June 2021 on a two-year contract, having made 15 appearances for Sunderland U23’s during the 2020/21 season.
Wombwell first appeared for The Black Cats’ U18 setup in March 2019, making 25 appearances across two seasons before progressing to the club’s U23 side.
The youngster spent time on loan with Marske United and Morpeth Town during the 2021/22 season, and made nine appearances for Gateshead as they won the National League North title.
