Gateshead FC is delighted to confirm the signing of Tommy Lavery on a two-year contract.
The right-sided defender signs on Tyneside until 2028 after departing Sunderland following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season – progressing through The Black Cats’ academy system from the age of nine through to U21 level.
The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan with Northern Irish Premiership side Cliftonville, appearing 18 times before later joining Enterprise National League side FC Halifax Town on temporary terms in January 2026. Lavery would spend the rest of the season plying his trade with The Shaymen, making nine appearances in all competitions as they finished eighth in the National League.
“I’m really looking forward to it!” said Lavery.
“I know what the [National League] is like now – I know how to win games. I feel like I’ve got experience in the game from last year, so I one-hundred percent know what we need to do this year and I’ll help the team as much as possible.
“The two-year deal shows the belief they have in me and shows what this club wants to do moving forward, so I’m looking forward to getting in and playing as many games as I can.”
Welcome to Gateshead, Tommy!
Subject to National League & FA approval.
