Gateshead return to Tyneside to face Southend United at Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday, November 25 (3pm kick off).

Rob Elliot’s side recorded their third consecutive win in midweek with a 2-1 victory over Solihull Moors, on the back of 2-0 and 6-0 wins against Dorking Wanderers and Barnet.

Those nine points now see The Heed sitting fifth in the National League table, with the opportunity to move fourth should they win this afternoon and Solihull fail to do so at Altrincham.

Stephen Wearne has been in fine form over the last two weeks, netting four goals in three games to take his tally for the season nine, while also hitting 10 assists.

Southend arrive on Tyneside fresh having had no midweek fixture following their win over Chesterfield last weekend, and have lost just once in their last five away fixtures in the National League.

The Shrimpers would sit one point and one place behind Gateshead but for their enforced 10-point deduction earlier this season, and are the sixth-highest scoring team in the division.

Former Chorley front man Harry Cardwell leads the scoring charts for Kevin Maher’s side with 11 league goals so far this season – one behind Gateshead striker Marcus Dinanga.

Heed View

“We know it’s a huge test,” said Rob Elliot.

“They’ve had a settled squad for a long time and are obviously in a bit of a false position in the league.

“They’ve got really good individuals and a clear way of playing with a good manager, so we’re going to have to be on it.

“We want to really attack the day on Saturday to finish a tough week off strongly, and keep the momentum going from what we’ve done so far.”

Opposition View

“They’ve kept playing the same way, and you can see they stick to it,” said Southend boss, Kevin Maher.

“It’s a tough game, but we’re coming with confidence as well.”

Team News

Joe Grayson could be included in the squad after missing two games through injury, though Connor McBride, Robbie Tinkler and Carl Magnay remain unavailable.

Match Report: Will Brown

Gateshead extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-1 draw against Southend United at Gateshead International Stadium.

Stephen Wearne made it four consecutive matchdays that he was named on the scoresheet – this time being a curled effort into the top-right corner in the 14th minute.

After a hard-battled second-half Southend levelled the scoring as Harry Cardwell slotted home a rebound in the 75th minute.

Rob Elliott made one change to the team that defeated Solihull Moors 1-2 on Tuesday. Regan Booty was reintroduced into the starting XI as Luke Hannant dropped to the bench – Mamadou Jobe was named to make his home debut.

The Heed nearly opened the scoring within the first 20 seconds of the match. A quick counter-attack by Olley allowed the Gateshead skipper to cut inside before forcing David Martin into making a save at his near post.

In the seventh minute, Booty drove forward with the ball from his own half before he slipped Marcus Dinanga in one-on-one with the Southend goalkeeper – the striker failed to add to his 12 league goals as he fired the ball over the bar.

Gateshead did manage to ripple the back of the net with their next chance. Louis Storey did exceptionally well to step into midfield to win possession before he found Wearne out wide to whip the ball into the far corner to give the Tynesiders the lead.

After a back-and-forth tussle for possession, the next chance of the match fell to Gateshead in the 43rd minute. Kyran Lofthouse played an inverted pass to Callum Whelan who was unable to direct his effort from 30 yards on target.

Southend should have been level in the 52nd minute. Harry Cardwell’s flick-on allows Daniel Kanu to be in one-on-one but the striker’s rolled effort was collected by Archie Mair.

Gateshead looked certain to have doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute. Hannant played an unbelievably 40-yard pass which beat Southend’s high line and fell to Dinanga – the Heed striker’s shot was impressively saved by Martin.

Mair stood tall to keep Wood’s volley out but Cardwell followed up on the rebound to equalise the scoring.

Gateshead: Mair, Richardson, Storey, Jobe, Lofthouse, Booty, Francis, Whelan (Hunter, 73’), Olley (Hannant, 35’), Wearne (Chadwick, 73’), Dinanga.

Subs: Allan, Pani.
